ABOUT PSYCHOSYNTHESIS
Psychosynthesis = Psyche + Synthesis
{the bringing together of the elements of our mind and soul in to a connected whole. It is derived from the words ‘Psyche’ and ‘Synthesis’.}
Psyche: the human, mind, soul, spirit
Synthesis: the combination of components or elements to form a connected whole.
Psychosynthesis was developed in the early 1900’s by Italian psychoanalyst and Medical Doctor, Roberto Assagioli. Psychosynthesis is a psychospiritual psychology that helps us to deepen our understanding of human nature, then to find ways to effectively use our new awareness in everyday life. Psychosynthesis includes working to release unconscious patterns of conflict, trauma, shame and restriction from the past, and then to restore balance to the various parts of the personality in the present. Working in the present is an important part of psychosynthesis, understanding the serving and limiting aspects of your personality and behaviours is paramount in order to facilitate integration of the past and new decision making that aligns authentically with who you are.
Because Psychosynthesis is a psychospiritual psychology it includes experiential methods of enquiry that allow us to connect with our own unique, purpose, meaning and values and then explore ways in which these insights can be grounded and expressed into our every day life. This is the synthesis part of Psychosynthesis.
Sam Keen in his book “The golden Mean” p. 98 In one of his letters Freud said, “I am interested only in the basement of the human building.” We try to build an elevator which will allow a person access to every level of his personality. After all, a building with only a basement is very limited. We want to open up the terrace where you can sun-bathe or look at the stars. Our concern is the synthesis of all areas of the personality. This means psychosynthesis is holistic, global and inclusive. It is not against psychoanalysis or even behavior modification, but it insists that the need for meaning, for higher values, are as real as biological or social needs.
“A person who is able to be a living centre of peace in today’s world and who is able to radiate that peace powerfully, ceaselessly, will be in a position to give needy mankind the benefit it lacks most and is in greatest need of.” – Roberto Assagioili
